The key things that make the setting unique: ## Ancestral Origins By reimagining the origins of the fantasy races, I hope to make for a more interconnected world. To that point, most sentient races in Kald are descended from either humans, elves, or dwarves. Orcs and gnolls, for instance, evolved from humans, while goblins are descendants of orcs, and halflings trace their lineage to dwarves. This decision wasn't just about being different; it was about creating a world with deep, intertwined histories. By connecting these races, it opens up rich veins of cultural conflict, shared heritage, and complex relationships that players can explore. It adds layers of nuance to inter-racial interactions and allows for a more realistic, lived-in world. ## Linguistic Landscape The [[Languages|languages]] of Kald are intended to reflect the inhabitants' histories and evolution, while reducing bloat. For example, Orkish serves as a common tongue for orcs, goblins, and hobgoblins, while Guttertongue, a corrupted form of Orkish, adds more depth to goblin culture. This linguistic approach grounds the world in a sense of realism and history. It provides players with opportunities for more immersive roleplaying and adds an extra dimension to social interactions. The language barriers and connections become part of the storytelling, not just background flavor.
