A loose confederation of 20 tribes, ranging in size from 60 to 200, who occupy the frigid [[Shard (Realm)|Shard]] of [[Gath]] (previously the highlands of Thalinor). Constantly on the move, dwelling in large communal tents, each tribe keeps herds of auroch and large northern bred horses, which are actively traded for material goods such as tools, ironworkings and other artifacts they may cherish. Prior to [[The Shattering]], the various tribes held a gathering each spring north of [[Qal'Borden]]'s famous [[Rimeway]] that led into the Highlands. They traded with caravan merchants and each other, a truce being declared for the occasion. The rest of the year, the Gathkanathi tribes were likely to be hostile to each other as well as outsiders. Their warriors, mounted on large horses, are usually well-armed with bows, spears, and leather shields. # Notable Tribes ## Chymak Clans are matrilineal, but not matriarchal — meaning descent and inheritance are traced through the maternal line. The Chymak are great fishermen and noted for their large sea canoes, which they skillfully navigate through the perilous northern waters of Gathakanathi. ## Erutaki Unorganized tribes inhabiting the hilly forests. ## Uylen Nomadic tribe who inhabits the eastern forests of Gathakanathi.
