[ saw-raw-keem ] !Saraqim.png ## Overview The Saraqim are a nomadic tribe primarily consisting of Shisk, though they welcome members of other races who prove their worth and dedication to the tribe's ways. Renowned for their mastery of desert survival and their deep spiritual connection to The Echoist, the Saraqim have carved out a unique place in the harsh landscape of Vastuum. ## Culture and Society ### Tribal Structure The Saraqim operate under a tribal structure, with leadership typically falling to a council of elders known simply as The Circle. These elders are chosen not by age alone, but by their ability to interpret the subtle messages of The Echoist and their prowess in desert craft. ### Nomadic Lifestyle The tribe moves with the seasons, traditionally following paths known only to them. Their encampments are masterfully efficient and can be erected or dismantled within minutes. ### Rites of Passage Prospective members of the tribe, as well as those just coming of age, must undergo a trial known as the Walk of Echoes, which involves surviving alone in the desert for a lunar cycle, guided only by their learnings. ## Beliefs and Traditions ### Oral History The Saraqim's rich history is preserved through storytelling. Tribal bards are tasked with memorizing and reciting the tribe's entire history, often in the form of elaborate epics and fables. ### Prophecy and Divination Saraqim believe strongly in prophecy and that The Echoist speaks through natural phenomena—the patterns in shifting sand dunes, the flight patterns of local birds, or the timing of rare desert blooms. The ability to interpreting these signs is highly respected. ## Relations with Outsiders The Saraqim are notoriously wary of outsiders, particularly those from urban areas. They view city-dwellers as disconnected from the true voice of The Echoist, drowned out by the noise of civilization. However, the tribe is not entirely isolationist. They engage in limited trade—albeit with a measure of caution—exchanging knowledge and various rare desert resources for necessary supplies. ## Language The Saraqim speak a dialect of Shisk known as Saraqi, which incorporates subtle tonal variations to convey additional layers of meaning.
