The town's name derives from the frequent sands that pour down from the plateau around which it is built. ## History Originally settled as a base during the construction of the Sanctum on the Altar—the first temple of The Argentyne Order—Sandfall gradually grew as more residents sought proximity to the temple. Over time, it developed into a small city with a stable economy. ## Economy Sandfall's economy is primarily based on mining and desert farming. The town specializes in raising aurochs, cultivating kettle leaf, and growing various acidic fruits adapted to the desert climate. ## Notable Features ### The Kettle Leaf Exchange The Kettle Leaf Exchange began as a smaller offshoot of Khurranai's renowned "Grand Market", a massive monthly market that draws traders from across Vastuum and beyond. As Sandfall grew, local merchants who couldn't make the journey to Khurrani began hosting their own exchange. Over time, the locals began to refer to the market simply as the "Kettle Leaf Exchange" after the abundant local crop. The exchange has since evolved into a significant market in its own right, though it remains more intimate than its Khurranai counterpart. ### The Whispering Well An ancient well in the center of town that occasionally emits eerie whispers. Locals believe the well to be connected to an underground river that carries echoes from other parts of Vastuum. Some claim to have heard prophecies or long-lost secrets from the well. ### Sandport This bustling "port" is home to Duraq's sephir stables and the Dune Runners' outpost, providing essential services for desert travelers. #### Duraq's Sephir Stables A large, open-air facility run by Duraq, a respected sephir breeder. The stables include a nursery for young sephir and offer riding lessons to travelers unfamiliar with the desert mounts. #### Dune Runners A company of skilled desert navigators who use sail-equipped sand skiffs for transportation across the harsh terrain. They play a crucial role in trade and travel between Sandfall and nearby settlements. ## Culture and Religion Sandfall is deeply influenced by the presence of the Argentyne Order. Every seven days, members of the Order travel to the Sanctum on the Altar to teach neophytes and children the art of Listening to The Echoist. ## Notable Residents - **Sunnie:** Runs a creature processing workshop, Sunnie's Monster Mill, breaking down monsters into useful crafting materials, food, and tools. - **Lippy:** Proprietor of the local tavern, The Fox Den. - **Gerard:** The town's blacksmith. ## Surrounding Area Sandfall is located near the Brine Wastes, dangerous salt flats known for monstrous creatures and its giant thermal vents. However, the town itself is considered a safe haven in the harsh desert environment.
