Frostgate is one of only three known two-way Aetherways connecting the nexus city of Eilanthar to the frozen realm of Gath. Unlike most Etherways, which allow travel in only one direction, Frostgate permits passage both to and from Gath, making it a strategically vital point of transit.
Since The Shattering, the presence of Frostgate has become a topic of significant debate. Eilanthar, recognizing its strategic importance, has stationed a permanent military presence on the Gath side of the gate. This garrison, known as the Frostwatch, officially exists to regulate traffic through the Aetherway and prevent unauthorized entry into Eilanthar.
However, this move has been met with strong opposition from Gath's indigenous population, particularly the clans of the nomadic Giantkin tribes who have roamed the frozen wastes for millennia. The goliaths view this sudden influx as an infringement on their ancestral lands and fear it may be a precursor to further territorial expansion.
The controversy surrounding the Frostgate has led to several incidents, including light skirmishes between the Frostwatch and goliath war parties. Attempts at negotiation have thus far proved unsuccessful, with neither side willing to fully concede their position.
Scholars and mages of the Arcanum continue to study Frostgate, as well as the Grand Passage and Unity Crossing, hoping to uncover the secrets of their unique bi-directional properties. Some theorize that understanding its mechanics could lead to the creation of new two-way Aetherways, potentially re-establishing a means of convenient travel between the fragmented realms left in the wake of The Shattering.
